Serous acini of the parotid gland (400X)

Within the lobules we find serous acini that are held together by a very thin connective tissue wherein fibroblasts reside. The nuclei of the serous cells are clearly visible.

Other structure you might expect to find in the lobule are:

  • intercalated ducts; quite small and made up of cubical cells (not visible in this picture)
  • striated ducts; somewhat larger and is made up of pyramid-looking cells (not seen in this image).
  • blood vessels
  • adipose tissue
