Blood vessels inside cortical bone (200X)

At higher magnification you can see some dark "channels" within the cortical bone. These channels are actually blood vessels penetrating the bone. The cortical bone is of the compact type and osteocytes are seen throughout the bony tissue.

The dark area to the left of the cortical bone is where the bone marrow resides. This is also where you'll fin the trabekular bone.
