This image shows a developing tooth at the cap stage. The outline of the dental follicle is visible and the dental papilla is jammed with cells.

The tooth germ is comprised of three parts:

  1. the dental papilla that later on develops into dentin and pulp tissue
  2. the dental organ (also known as the enamel organ) that developes into enamel
  3. the dental follicle that develops into cementoblasts of the cementum and fibroblasts of the periodontium
