This image shows in more detail the two kinds of cells making up the glandular part of the corpus luteum. The cells with the darkest colour and the least cytoplasm, are theca lutein cells. The other kind of cells, the granulosa lutein cells, have a more abundant and paler cytoplasm than the theca lutein cells. Both these types of cells produce steroid hormones, mostly progesterone but also smaller quantities of estrogen.
