Taste bud of the tongue (600X)

Taste buds can be seen as small oval shapes in the epithelium of the fungiform papilla. They are made up of supportive cells and taste cells and have an opening to the dorsal surface of the tongue. In the papilla circumvallata, the taste buds reside in a furrow surrounding the pappilla.
