This section is showing the dorsal surface of the apex of the tongue (lingua) of a monkey. The tongue is covered in stratified squamous epithelium of which the lower side of the tongue is smooth while the dorsal surface has numerous protuberances which makes it rough looking. These protuberances are the papillae of the tongue (lat: papilla filiformis).
