This is a section through a human cochlea. Some parts of the mucous membrane of the middle ear is seen on the left. The inner ear canal (meatus acusticus internus) is on the right.

The modiolus is a conical shaped central axis in the cochlea. It consists of spongy bone and the cochlea turns approximately 2.75 times around the central axis in humans.

The bony labyrinth is the rigid, bony outer wall of the inner ear in the temporal bone.
