The basal layer, lying closest to the myometrium, is darker than the rest of the endometrium. It contains small, undifferentiated glands. In contrast, the glands in the functional layer have become much larger and have a coiled appearance. The endometrial stroma has become lighter, especially near to the surface due to accumulation of water (edema).
