The different layers of the tooth bud (400X)

Microimage
Image copyright: Mathias Nordvi, ARR. (Tissue stain: Azan).

This image displays the different layers of the tooth bud:

  • outer dental epithelium
  • stellate reticulum (stratum reticulare)
  • stratum intermedium
  • inner dental epithelium
  • odontoblast layer (only in the incisal area)
  • predentine
  • cells of the dental papilla

The blue, thin zone in between the inner dental epithelium and the odontoblast layer indicates that dentin formation has begun (predentine).
