Frontal section of the tongue (40X)

This is a frontal section of the tongue (lat: lingua). The tongue is mainly a muscle so much of what you se is muscle tissue. Its surface is covered by epithelium and lots of protuberances called papillae. The lamina propria below the epithelium mostly contains connective tissue, but some glandular tissue can be seen as well.
